There is a growing shift in the way we think about food. Protein, vitamins and functional nutrition are increasingly appearing in everyday foods, but the conversation can sometimes become very focused on restriction, “clean eating” and counting numbers.
We were recently introduced to Nutri-Ice® who take a rather different approach.
Developed by consultant oncologist Dr Jon Krell, My Doctor’s Recipe’s fortified ice cream was born from his experience of seeing patients struggle to maintain their nutritional intake during illness and treatment.
The thinking was simple: if eating becomes difficult, could nutrition be delivered in a food that people actually enjoy?
Each 100ml serving of Nutri-Ice provides 10g of whey protein and 300+ calories, alongside a blend of vitamins and minerals. Rather than trying to make ice cream into a clinical-looking nutritional supplement, the idea is to make nutritional support feel much more like normal food – familiar, enjoyable and something you might actually look forward to eating.
That feels particularly relevant to the way we’re increasingly talking about women’s health and wellbeing.
We’re being encouraged to think more about protein, strength, healthy ageing and nourishing our bodies, but that doesn’t have to mean every meal becoming a calculation or every treat being something to feel guilty about.
Nutri-Ice offers an interesting example of the growing “functional indulgence” movement -foods that aim to combine pleasure with a nutritional purpose.
Dr Krell could talk about:
- Why enjoyment can matter when we’re trying to improve nutritional intake
- The surprising clinical story behind the development of a nutritional ice cream
- Why protein and nutrition shouldn’t necessarily mean restriction
- How our relationship with “treat foods” is changing
- The growing trend towards functional foods that fit naturally into everyday life
- Why food can be both nourishing and pleasurable
Perhaps living well isn’t about taking pleasure out of food, but finding more ways to make the food we enjoy work a little harder for us.
